Chapter I Early Tragedy & The Seed of Defiance

Born Amidst Peasant Rebellions

Sridev Suman was born on 25 May 1916 in the high-altitude village of Jaul, nested along the steep ridges of Patti-Bamund near Chamba in Tehri Garhwal. His father, Dr. Hari Ram Badoni, was an esteemed Ayurvedic practitioner known throughout the hills for serving impoverished villagers without fee, while his mother, Tara Devi, was a woman of deep resolve and spiritual composure.

Tragedy struck when Suman was barely three years old: his father succumbed to an epidemic, leaving Tara Devi to raise young Sridev alone amidst severe economic hardships. His childhood unfolded against the backdrop of recurrent ‘Dhandaks’—spontaneous agrarian peasant uprisings against the ruthless taxation of royal forest conservators and revenue collectors. Watching hill peasants resist arbitrary arrests, the boy internalized an uncompromising aversion to dynastic servitude.

Chapter II -The Salt Satyagraha & Wardha Awakening

Incarcerated at Age Fourteen

In 1930, when Mahatma Gandhi sounded the bugle of civil disobedience with the Salt March, the echoes shook the Doon Valley. The fourteen-year-old Suman joined student picketing in Dehradun, defying colonial magistrate orders. Arrested on the spot, the young boy was sentenced to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment in Dehradun Jail.

Upon his release, the experience did not cow him; it propelled him straight to the Sevagram Ashram in Wardha to meet Mahatma Gandhi. Sitting at the feet of the Mahatma, Suman imbibed the core tenets of pure nonviolent Satyagraha, constructive rural service through spinning Khadi, and steadfast resilience against structural oppression. Every time he subsequently attempted to re-enter Tehri princely territory to teach local villagers, royal spies intercepted him at the borders.

Chapter III-The Srinagar Summit & Marriage

Meeting Nehru & Union with Vinay Laxmi

The year 1938 marked an inflection point in his personal and political destiny. In the ancient capital of Srinagar (Garhwal), a landmark political conclave convened under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. Suman delivered a scathing, documented exposé on the feudal atrocities in Tehri, describing how subjects were stripped of press freedoms, free association, and fundamental dignity.

“Pandit Nehru was deeply moved by the quiet intensity of this twenty-two-year-old Garhwali youth and urged him to federate the regional struggle directly into the All-India States Peoples’ Conference, aligning Himalayan civil rights with the national freedom struggle.”

That same year, Suman married Vinay Laxmi, an educated, brave woman who shared his patriotic idealism. Even though family duties beckoned, Vinay Laxmi understood Suman’s vows and stood as an unshakeable pillar of support as he embarked into the crosshairs of royal persecution.
